Rugby Union

We have played this traditional 15-man rugby in Norway for 50 years. In addition, we also play 7s rugby and 10 man rugby. The 7s & 10s game is played by both men and women, whereas only the men play the full 15-man game at the moment.

THE GAME

Points are scored with “tries”, which is when players are able to place the ball on the ground of the opponents “try zone”. This form of scoring gives the team 5 points, another variation of the “try” is a “penalty try”. This is where the referee awards a try that was certain to be scored but prevented by the opposition using foul play. After a”try” the team is given a chance for extra points with a “conversion” this is when the ball is taken back in line with where the ball was scored; then a player tries to kick it through the posts. A conversion is worth 2 points.

There are two varieties of rugby union, XVs and 7s. XVs are the most important original version. Two teams of 15 players play each other in a match of 2 x 40 minute rounds. 7s rugby is destined to be a fast and exciting variant of rugby, it has the same rules except for a few adaptations. The main difference is that in the 7s there are only seven players per team, in matches that are 2 x 7 minute halves. A team should play 3 – 7 matches during a tournament weekend.

BECOME A PART OF RUGBY UNION

In any sport, playing for your national team is the pinnacle of an athlete’s career and in rugby union, it is no different! Since —- the Norwegian Rugby Federation has put forward a national XVs team for European/World Rugby Competitions. We are currently participating in the Rugby Europe Conference 2 North. The Rugby Europe Conference 2 is the fourth level of Rugby Europe’s Men’s Senior XV competition. We play 4 matches in 12 months, two home and two away. It consists of the ten teams which is split into two pools – North and South – the winners of each Conference 2 competition will be promoted to the respective Conference 1 divisions. Currently the league is made up of Norway, Austria, Denmark, Finland and Moldova. In the Next year we want to be consistently in the top 2 of the league and gain promotion by the end of 2022.

Rugby union XVs is played all over Norway. We have 5 big clubs who play XVs on a regular basis, these are: Stavanger, Bergen, Sagene, Blindern and NTNU. Horten RK, OSI RK and Sandefjord RK are more competitive on the 7s circuit but are fast growing with XVs. These clubs span from North to South and East to West, giving you the best chance to get involved in Rugby.

As the Men’s National XVs team, we have 4 training camps and 4 REC2N matches a year. We have two small camps the same weekend as our 2 home matches, made up of the match day 23 and a select few. We then have 2 longer residential camps, one in the early autumn and one in the summer. The one in August is a closed group of 25-30, and usually takes place in England for training and matches against a few local sides. Autumn camp is a more open/invitational long weekend, where clubs can send players that they think are at the top level, or that they are on the brink and will benefit from that high level experience.

There are rules to representing your country, in corelation with World rugby and Rugby Europe you must be:

  • ¼ Norwegian by birth (Norwegian Grandparents)
  • Born in Norway
  • Permanently lived in Norway for 5 consecutive years (1825 days).
